Our History
For more than 50 years, the Lions Club of Toukley has been proudly serving the local community, continuing a tradition of volunteer service that began in the late 1960s.
The idea for the club first emerged in late 1966, when Lion Pat Morley, President of the Lions Club of The Entrance, met with Toukley businessman Guy Rowlands to discuss establishing a Lions club in the area. The club was officially formed on 13 April 1967 and chartered on 2 June 1967 with 27 founding members, with Lion Guy Rowlands serving as the club’s Charter President. The Charter Night was held at the Catholic Hall in Main Road, The Entrance, with more than 200 people attending the celebration.
From its earliest years, the club quickly became involved in improving local facilities and supporting community life. One of the first major projects took place in 1968–1969, when members constructed a septic toilet block at Jenny Dixon Reserve, along with shelter sheds and a fireplace for the benefit of families and visitors to the area.
The club soon expanded its service across the region. In 1969–1970, the Lions Club of Toukley helped sponsor the formation of the Lions Club of Wyong, extending Lions service across the Central Coast. During the 1970s the club also supported a wide range of community initiatives, including hosting underprivileged children for seaside holidays, contributing to youth programs, and supporting major charitable appeals.
Members consistently gave their time and effort to raise funds for community causes. In the mid-1970s the club donated funds toward the Toukley Public Pool and contributed thousands of volunteer hours supporting local projects and disaster relief efforts, including fundraising for the Cyclone Tracy Appeal following the devastation in Darwin.
Over the decades, the club has continued to support the community through initiatives such as youth exchange programs, Lions Youth of the Year, Carols by Candlelight, community catering, recycling projects, and many local fundraising events.
Today, the Lions Club of Toukley continues to build on the foundations laid by its founding members in 1967, with volunteers working together to support local organisations, assist those in need, and strengthen the community.
